Originally found throughout the Philippines and New Guinea, the Spotted whistling duck has been making its way south. It was found at Weipa on the Cape York Peninsula and established itself in northern Australia in around 2011.

In 2012, birds were found on the Daintree River and it has since become established with regular breeding occurring.
