A scarlet orange mushroom of the waxcap genus, found worldwide.

In Australia it is most often found in subtropical rainforest and eucalypt forest and can be a deep scarlet through to vermillion colour with white to yellow gills which are attached and run down the stem a short way. Spores are white.
The genus Hygrocybe (hygro = moist / cybe = head), often known as waxcups are often brightly coloured and have waxy or slimy caps.
