After laying its eggs (between one and five on the underside of a leaf) she will guard that leaf. The males are territorial, and as they get older they get "set in their ways" and usually stay in the same region.

The eggs take about four days to hatch and the caterpillars are on their way. They are black with an orange head, and orange tip on the last segment.
