Prolific in disturbed areas of rainforest, especially along the edge of farmland and roadsides.
Merremia grows from an underground tuber and climbs high, to cover the surrounding vegetation. It does not appear to have a major detrimental effect, and it is indeed believed to have a benefit in "repairing" damaged rainforest, by providing support to the surrounding trees. It is considered invasice in other countries, including Somoa.
The stems can be up to 20 metres long and are smooth, twinning at the top. Leaves are alternate and almost heart shaped.
Merremia produces beautiful white flowers in bunches of 13 or more flowers.
