A communal bird that lives on the edges of swamps and rivers where it can feed.
It is small as far as cormorants go, growing to around 56-58cm and has a shorter bill. Juveniles are a dark brown and the black and white strengthens in contrast as the bird matures.
They dive into the water and feed from the river floor, where they will take small fish and crustaceans.
They breed after the "Wet Season" in far north Queensland, and nest in trees near, or in the water, building platforms out of branches and sticks.
