The whole plant can grow to around 1.5 metres, with its roots firnly held in the soil below the water. The large leaves (up to 60cm diameter) are usually held above the water which helps distinguish it from a Water lily.

The seed heads have an interesting shape, almost resembling a shower head or the spout of a watering can.

In Asia, all parts of the plant are eaten, with petals used for garnish, seed heads, seeds, roots and stems are made into a variety of dishes and teas.

Nelumbo nucifera is considered sacred in both Hindu and Buddhist traditions, and is often used in artwork depicting their deities.
