Also known as the Rufous Night Heron, this is a medium sized heron that is mostly nocturnal.

It does however feed during the day, also and takes fish, insects and reptiles and amphibians.

It nests communally, near water and builds a platform shaped nest out of sticks.

It has a hunched appearance and is quite stocky. Most of the day, you are most likely to find it in dense foliage alongside the river.

During breeding season, the back of the head will have three nuptial plumes.
