Mudskippers have modified pectoral and pelvic fins that it uses to "skip" around on mudflats in inter-tidal areas.

They are usually territorial and will defend their patch quite aggressively. Anywhere you see mud flats or mangrove areas, you are likely to be able to observe these creatures going about their daily lives.

They are able to remain out of water by breathing through their skin and the lining of their mouth, provided it is kept moist. They are also able to close their large gill chambers to retain moisture so that they can still function in air.

They burrow into river banks, below high tide mark which helps with maintaining body temperature, provides a place to lay eggs and provides shelter from predators.

They actively hunt worms and small crustaceans and are very active, making them entertaining viewing from the banks. When startled, they will skim across the water to safety very quickly and then sit still on the bank or a log.
