A thick set dragonfly, found in northern Australia around still, fresh water.

They are often seen gliding, and when beating their wings, they do it slowly. When resting, they hold their wings out, like most dragonflies.

The hind wings have black and yellow bands and both sets of wings have black tip margins.

We have observed these in large groups, circling and you can hear their wings beating, making a fluttering sound.

There are two Australian sub-species, distinguished by the size of the nodal spots on the wings.
