The Masked Lapwing Plover can often be found along the edges of waterways, however is adaptable in its behaviour and often nests in open parkland, where it defends its nest vigorously. They will call loudly and swoop intruders, occasionally striking with the spur on the carpal joint of their wing. Contrary to folklore, the spur does not contain any poison.
